Ovens should be deep cleaned every three months, but not many households do this because it can be such a big chore to remove thick grease and grime from inside, on the racks and glass door. Clean It, Fix It star Maxine Dwyer had a homemade solution that made the job really easy.

A dirty oven can reduce the efficiency and quality of the appliance

Ron Shimek, president of Mr Appliance explained: “Having excess residue built up in your oven will not only make your food taste unpleasant but will also make your oven work harder to cook or bake your food to the ideal temperature.”

Grease and grime build up on the glass especially, but Maxine had an easy way to clean it.

First, she heated the oven to around 100 degrees and let it cool down just enough for a deep clean.

Next, she made a homemade cleaning solution that is perfect for this job.

Maxine explained: “I have got 100ml of white vinegar, I’m going to put about eight heaped teaspoons of baking powder into the vinegar.

“Take your time otherwise it bubbles up and goes all over the place.

“The consistency is gritty, you need the fine grit to help rub the grease off.

“I’m going to smear it on the oven door glass,” she added. After a few seconds of rubbing the solution in a circular motion, she showed the camera her fingers.

“Can you see that?” Maxine said referencing the grime coming off. “It’s working already.”

She then washed the area and remarked: “I don’t even need a rag!”

Food residue on ovens is typically acidic, baking powder neutralises these acids and breaks down the grease.

Wiping the area she had cleaned, Maxine noticed the difference” “Absolutely effortless clean! Look at that - sparkling! White vinegar and baking powder - can you believe it? I can’t.”

As for the racks inside the oven, they can be soaked in hot, soapy water before scrubbing away the debris.

A dishwasher tablet can also be dissolved in hot water, and the racks are left for about two hours.

Then simply scrub with a stiff brush, and rinse and dry before returning them to the oven.

After cleaning the oven, it’s a good idea to protect it from future grease and grime.

Using an oven liner can protect the bottom of the oven from any food splashes.

As for the grill rack and tray, this can be covered in tin foil to protect it - it’s also a really easy way to stop it from getting dirty.
